As part of the 5-year restoration of the course, capital projects are underway and we couldn’t be more excited that the greenside bunker renovation project is in progress. While many golfers think of bunkers as a penalty area guiding their playing strategy, bunker are also an aesthetic feature adding to the visual beauty of the golf course.

The renovation of the 39 greenside bunkers on the golf course began August 10. This project will be completed in multiple phases with the overall timeframe of 8-10 weeks from start to finish. Each bunker renovation includes new drainage, a sod liner and sand.

The first step of the renovation is cleaning out and restoring the shape of the bunker. Most of the bunkers on the golf course have serious issues with plugged or collapsed drainage. New drainage is being added to match the characteristics and design of each bunker.

The second phase of the bunker renovation is installation of sod and then allowing it to root which takes several weeks. Once established, the sod will be treated to regulate growth. Bunker liners are included to extend the life of bunkers as well as to improve playability out of the sand. While there are many bunker liner options, sod liners are one of the oldest and most consistent liner options still used today. One of the primary benefits of a sod liner is reduced contamination from the soil and stones beneath it.

Last but certainly not least, the final step in the project is adding sand. The new sand will be evenly spread out to an average of 5 inches and then it is time to play greenside bunker shots again at The Golf Club at Rio Vista!
